Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. To celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the up-coming Black History month, Ash Lawn-Highland, home of President James Monroe, will focus on the contribution of African-Americans to Southern cuisine. Folkways interpreter, Martha Bar, will discuss foods of African origin and prepare them on the open hearth. These foods which include okra, yams, sesame, and black eyed peas were brought to the colonies by enslaved Africans. Sunday, January 10, 2010 from 12:30 - 4:30. For information call 434-293-8000. |

Valentine Workshop. In celebration of the 214th anniversary of James and Elizabeth Kortright Monroe, Ash Lawn-Highland will offer a Valentine workshop. Sunday, February 7 bring a friend, bring a family member, bring a sweetheart for a very special afternoon. Martha Bar and Russell Hubert, folkways interpreters, will help attendees fashion nostalgic items inspired by 18th century artisans. The afternoon also includes a tour of the beautifully appointed Monroe home. Cost: $9.00 includes all materials. Time: 1:00 – 3:00. Space is limited. Reservations required. Presidents' Day Weekend. In the tradition of honoring America’s chief executives, past and present, Ash Lawn-Highland will host a three-day event Presidents’ Day weekend. The celebration will take place February 13-15 from 1 PM – 4 PM and includes special programming for children plus a visit with President Monroe. Children can participate in hands-on presidential activities and crafts in the conference room. Games from the Monroe era will also be set up, weather permitting. On Monday, February 15, visitors will be greeted by President James Monroe (interpreted by Dennis Bigelow), who will share his favorite memories as president. Monroe’s presidency marked the end of the revolutionary era and the emergence of a generation of Americans with a new vision for the country. President Monroe will discuss these visions.
